Patrick BAILLY-MAITRE-GRAND
Introduction
Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand was born on February 1st 1945 in Paris. In 1969, he graduated in physical science from Paris Jussieu's Faculty of Science. In 1979, his career was launched by his paintings. From the 1980s, his research in the aesthetics made him start photography. For him, photographs result from a process of disclosure and he thus adopts a scientific approach. Thanks to the use of several technics like the daguerreotype, which fixes the details and depths of the subject, his works highlights the physics of photography shootings. As in scientific experiments, Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand works with series and declines his subjects to seize their meanings. By refusing to work with new technologies, photography becomes a privileged medium between the aesthetic and the chemical process.
He prints his works himself and adds curves and dyeing, like a chemist experimenting in his laboratory. He uses historical technics and accompanies us through the processes he exploits backwards; light becomes matter, substance vanishes. His master is Etienne Jules Marey and his inspiration is the anonym photographs he collects.
Worldwide museums, like the MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, the National Contemporary Art Fund, the Museum Victoria in Melbourne, the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich (GB), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg, the Museet for Fotokunst Odense, etc., exhibited and included in their collections Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand's works.
