The exhibition presents a selection of works from the American photographer, known for his enigmatics images where the glory of the human body merges with the spiritual quest, with the misery and anguish religion.
In his work, Joel-Peter Witkin, revisits the method of composition typical of the painter, the themes of Western mythology, the masterpieces of European art tradition and the canonical representation of the human body. His works are full of quotations and references to the great names in the history of photography, as Muybridge or Rejlander, or with the Greek and Roman sculpture, art, baroque, neoclassical and modern. Witkin's work is dominated by the theme of the representation of nudity, its links with eroticism, pain and pleasure, but also with degradation and death.
