Christian COURREGES
Introduction
Chistian Courrèges was born in 1950 in Aix-en-Provence and died in 2017 in Paris. He was teaching at the ENSAD.
Christian Courrèges was specialised in portraying members of the same defined groups, such as toreros, prisoners and guards of the Baumettes prison, French and English magistrates and prelates of Roman Curia in cloth. He also photographed close-ups of Haitians.
Hannah Arendt reminds us of the fact that the public space is by definition a space of appearance. In each series, the artist isolates the subject from any setting. The image is then entirely focused on the individual who can be identified thanks a function or status related attribute or uniform.
However, the artist helps us look beyond appearances and social classes, he questioned the tension between belonging to a group and asserting oneself, between authenticity and what is conventionally called ‘masking'.
