Alain CLEMENT
Introduction
Alain Clément was born in 1941 in Neuilly-sur-Seine (France). He lives and works between Paris and Nîmes.
As he worked on doing research in expression and composition, Alain Clément developed an abstract painting. He was friend with the artist group “Support-Surfaces” and, after a formalism period in the 1970s, he started painting colourful works, based on gestural simplicity and canvas saturation, in the 1980s.
Since 1990, he has been creating wall sculptures made of long coloured lines structuring the space. The artist chose to work like this for all his painted steel sculptures and even for his monumental works.
The close links between the constant round-trips between painting and sculpture that are enhanced by his engraving practice, still central for him, make Alain Clément's works singular. Engraving, like drawing, allows him to review his space research by focusing on line work. He still tries to turn the bi-dimensional space of the paper sheet or the canvas into an experimental field for the sculpted space. When Alain Clément created painted wall reliefs, he explored colours through volumes, as they disrupted plans. Nowadays, he attributes this role to painting, especially to his graphic dimension.
Values, traits, lines, ribbons and framework work, deny, force and cut into space in a profuse work, overcasting the formalist thesis and affirm the expressive and polysemous power of painting.
Alain Clément exhibited in several fairs: Paris, Basel, Cologne, Madrid, Dubai, New Delhi and Seoul. Several French museums dedicated solo exhibitions to his work like the Carré d'Art-musée d'art contemporain (Nîmes), Montpellier's Musée Fabre, Céret's le Musée d'art Moderne, the Centre Régional d'Art Contemporain of Montbéliard, the Musée d'art ancien et contemporain d'Epinal and the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Neufchâtel.
