Introduction

Philippe Perrin was born in 1964 in La Tronche. He lives and works in Paris.

Philippe Perrin is a French artist. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Grenoble in the 80s with Philippe Parreno, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Peter Joseph. It was one of the artists behind the exhibition Workshops of paradise (Air de Paris, Nice, 1990) exhibition which is a central moment in the emergence of the French art scene of the 90s

« Given that art knows no frontiers and that an artist can exhibit his work and himself indifferently in a kunsthalle, a church or a china shop, Philippe Perrin has once again chosen the Maison Européenne de la Photographie as a venue, having presented « Les Mystères de Paris » here in 1999. Philippe Perrin's subversive and provocative work challenges our relationship to art. François Villon, Caravaggio, Louis Mandrin, Arthur Cravan and Mesrine form a lurid pantheon from which he draws his inspiration. Inventing a dark, golden legend for himself, he is the unpredictable denizen of a world where fiction and reality blend into one. Guns, razorblades, handcuffs, giant knives and crowns of thorns are the sculptures that people Perrin's galaxy.
Photography is treated in the same way as sculpture, drawing, video and installations. It is the off-kilter mirror that reflects the self-portrait of an artist who is by turns a ruffian, a brigand, a boxer, and a victim. Carrying out, as Nicolas Bourriaud aptly terms it, a
« dysfunctioning of the self-image », Philippe Perrin is probably one of the few agitateurs to give meaning and beauty to any trivial piece of news, whether it be shrouded in mystery or redolent of the shadiest dealing. Rather than a retrospective which, like a tombstone, would freeze forever a body of work that is full of life and movement, this exhibition is intended to be a personal synthesis. It traces the career of a nonconformist artist who is able to dance blithely and with great humour over the abyss, and for whom « each exhibition is a small death, and each work a new birth ». » Jean-Luc Monterosso, Maison Européenne de la Photographie Director
