Antoine POUPEL
Introduction
« I started photography just before entering the school of fine arts from Le Havre in 1976, I have always felt comfortable with this medium, both at the time of the shooting, that the laboratory. As a student in the fine arts, I learned different techniques to create. It was natural that I started mixing mediums. I got my degree (DNSEP), on the subject of the relationship between photography and painting. And if I never painted directly on prints, my work is very painterly, or in connection with the history of art. Polaroid was a preferred medium during this period.
I have an iconoclastic side. We must never be satisfied with the world or ourselves, but try to make progress in its work and in its life. An artist creates his world and his world through a work, he brings his brand by transforming the "reality" that surrounds it.
I create images from obsessive elements, death, eroticism, religion, through the body (living, dead, or shown), history of art (tribute), rituals (religious, love, and manipulation).
In my work since 1982, I play with opposites. I organize meetings between the structures and the fluid between the erotic and the hidden between the macabre and enjoyment between the religious and the transgression between the mechanistic and the flesh, between the human and the animal.
From 1985 to 1998, much of my work is based on photographic monotype.
Monotype is a unique work to specifically photographic character undergoing various treatments, put on the border of photography and painting.
Monotype is in the field of photography. It is created only from the photographic technique. I consider the photographic medium as a material that I handle, mounts, enlarged, and which I explore the chemical and sensitive qualities.
Since 1995, I am interested in the electronic images, created from direct scans. The series of works called "natural history" and "Natural History skins" are created from electronic images, they mix nature and body. I often showed my capacity for processing images, the physical movement of the viewer to scan the image; I like that the viewer is sometimes lost, and asks a question :
What do I see ? »
