Mi-Hyun KIM
Introduction
Mi-Hyun Kim was born in 1962 in Seoul, South Korea.
She has been living and working in Paris since 1985, the year she moved to France to studying film semiotics. In 1990, she produced her first short-film and graduated from Paris III University with a master's degree in cinematography.
She discovered photography, and it became a new way to narrate her stories. She studied this subject at the EFET Paris School and then pursued with master courses of science of photography at Paris VIII University.
In 1993, she joined the Métis Agency and took part in the Photographic Mission of the Conseil Général de Seine Saint-Denis which theme was architecture. For this event, she produced her first Polaroid print transfer on aquarelle paper.
Mi-Hyun Kim is working on still life variations with sophistication. Fruits, flowers, common objects adorn a lyrical emphasis in her photographs. She knows how to give us a sensitive emotion able to translate fragrance and taste from each item.
She knows how to enshroud each item with a subtle sweetness that animate them in a way, conveying sometimes odours, sometimes tangible sensations, and always demanding an almost physical attachment to her universe.
The relevance of her approach of inanimate objects is echoed in her documentary images. A hugging couple, glimpsed in a distance, seem to come off the pages of a book, and this lonely drinker took refuge and seems to be appeased in the photographer's universe. The power of her images resides in the fact the subject seems to settle himself in it; she never forces her regard to the world but welcomes it affectionately.
