Francis LIMERAT
Introduction
Francis Limérat was born on August 1st 1946 in Alger. He lives and works between Paris and the Entre-Deux-Mer.
He is a teacher at Anger's Ecole des Beaux-Art.
Represented in several galleries in France and abroad, F. Limérat is featured in many solo and collective exhibitions.
Francis Limérat's work is very original and has gradually changed during the forty years of his artistic practice. Materials and techniques are new; pieces of oblong wood with different sizes, almost always painted, layered, stacked, like repetitive modules and assembled together with or without a precise order; sheets of paper and black ink or sepia worked with a feather or as a tint.
"No images, no medium. The material is both the work's skeleton and body. The wood, sometimes recycled, had already been shaped for other uses: boards or sticks, enslaved to geometry – measured, calibrated, tinted with nut husk.
His work is only rigour, order and rhythm. Appended and juxtaposed boards create an animated surface following the woods fibres, their texture, reliefs and the interstice separating them. The repetition of the shapes created as such guaranties the order. In contrast, the sticks form a hemstitched space with a steady – and almost haunting – rhythm. Surface-line, full-empty, black-white, contrasts, symmetry and asymmetry and rhythm compose the visual vocabulary of Limérat, recalling those of rural buildings (like wooden fences, timbering, doors) and African or other constructions. The “act” is precise, conscientious; well-done work is the basis of creation. Sometimes, accidents trouble this meticulous organisation. Then, ruptures – visual chocks disturbing the eye – but repetition soon takes over them. From linearity arise writing. The space condenses, tightens. It breathes."
Anto Alquier, visual art teacher at Riscle school.
